Bold & Bright Cape Cod Addition
Adding nearly 1,400 square feet of new space to this existing Cape Cod completely transformed the way the home lives. What was a cramped four-bedroom, two-bathroom house with limited storage and a small kitchen is now an open and light-filled home that suits a young family of five.
Expanding the main level allowed for the creation of a large mudroom/playroom, along with an open-concept living room, dining room, and kitchen space that flows seamlessly and thoughtfully.
In the kitchen, the large island is offset by a custom copper range hood and sparkling green backsplash tile that shimmers in all lighting conditions. Matching millwork built-ins seamlessly link the kitchen cabinetry to the dining room, complemented by a storage cabinet and bench seat at the new bay window. A carefully and deliberately designed first-floor hallway allows for easy access to two first-floor offices, a full bathroom, and a storage closet with custom cat-door access.
The expanded second floor features a new, comfortable primary suite, two children’s bedrooms, and a large hall bathroom.
The owners chose bold colors for this home, including a soft green for the bedroom and an orange bathroom. Finish and fixture choices included an eclectic combination of new items along with recycled and restored original items. For example, an old wardrobe chest was paired with an antique kitchen wash sink and converted into a bathroom vanity. Additionally, the kids’ shower tile was installed according to a custom-arranged pattern created by the owners.
A raised deck off the kitchen and mudroom provide additional entertaining space. The extra footprint also included a new garage, requiring underpinning of the original house foundations. Converting the overgrown and steep-slope side yard into new square footage was an easy win, giving this family a completely new home.
