The client has a beautiful wooded view at the back of their house. Opening the kitchen and adding on a sunroom really opened the space and flooded the home with natural light, while the new patio connected the indoor and outdoor living spaces.
This home renovation in Mount Holly, NC, includes two separate projects that took five months each – a basement renovation and master bathroom renovation. The basement renovation created a sanctuary for the family – including a lounging area, pool table, wine storage and wine bar, workout room, and lower level bathroom. The space is integrated with the gorgeous exterior landscaping, complete with a pool overlooking the lake. The master bathroom renovation created an elegant spa like environment for the couple to enjoy. Additionally, improvements were made in the living room and kitchen to improve functionality and create a more cohesive living space for the family.
This home remodel and addition in Davidson, NC, features two 4-month projects – a master bathroom and closet renovation, and a second story screened in patio addition overlooking the pool.
The client built a new pool house, complete with kitchen, pool table area, and a covered patio. A special, internal gutter system was used due to roofline considerations.
There were two challenges – The homeowners wanted a detached studio, but that did not meet HOA standards for the neighborhood, so the solution was to attach the storage area to the home with a covered walkway between the two structures. There were significant structural considerations and connectors required to make the new roof line work with the existing interior vaulted living room - we added a shed roof with a gable end detail to keep the roof line low and to create custom, beautiful exterior lines without compromising the interior light and feel of the living room.
This design combines traditional elements, like columns and stonework, and darker wood cabinets in the kitchen with a modern touch of color in the tile.
The client’s objective was to replace a non-descript wooden deck with a beautiful screened-in concrete patio. The roof system skylights maximize light flowing to the home, while the minimally invasive screening lets the clients take advantage of the view.
In addition to the traditional functions of a pool house, the client needed a private guest suite as well as a separate kids play area. This project gave them all three in this two-story pool house.
The biggest challenge on this project was the lot line – this particular lot did not give much room to expand the porch, giving setback and easement requirements. However, we worked with the county to gain approval to encroach a few feet on the easement, which provided the space needed. The client wanted a minimum of two generously sized areas – a sitting area around the fireplace and a dining area. This client also had amazing taste in finishes and functionality, so her choices also included full thickness slate, curved beams, gas lanterns, gorgeous decorative columns, 1x6 T&G ceiling, a pergola, and a gas fireplace.
To enlarge the size of the kitchen area, a back staircase was straightened, which gave the client six extra feet of length in the kitchen. This was enough space to build an island 12’ wide x 4’ deep. The clients also wanted a bright kitchen and installed almost 50 can lights.
The home exterior was stucco and considerable attention was spent ensuring the renovated area matched the original house and that the porch looked like it had always been there. One of the challenges was a steeply sloping back yard, with different degrees of slope and depth on either side of the porch. The old porch had a long set of stairs to facilitate getting from the house to the backyard. The solution to minimize the large staircase and create a more integrated space was to build a three-tiered patio that gradually traversed the sloped yard – one step down from the house was the covered porch, 3 more steps down led to the outside sitting area, with 4 more steps to go to get to the grilling area. Access to the tiered patio was moved to the left of the home to minimize the effects of the slope difference, particularly as this part of the house – on a corner lot – is visible to everyone driving up the street.
The challenge with this project was how to add two bathrooms in the upstairs bonus room area with a great room below. The small front stoop was enlarged and completely made over, with stone and columns over the front porch that became a focal point for the front of the house. Organization was a priority as a closet system was added to the back of the house and the office was completely remodelled with a wall of built-in cabinets and shelves.
The client had created a watercolor and asked us to make the house look like it. We gave it to the architect who transformed the previous board and batten sided home into a shake and stone transitional exterior with Mediterranean flair. The customer enjoyed the project so much; she later took a job with us as a sales rep and designer.
