As a kid I loved construction. Not so much the dump trucks and bulldozers, but building things—like tree forts and Lego houses. In college I developed an entrepreneurial spirit, but struggled to figure out what kind of business I wanted to be in. I still remember where I was when the light bulb went off: It was 1988, I was driving down the Massachusetts Turnpike delivering a car full of computers to a client in my beat-up Volkswagen Jetta when it just hit me that I wanted to build houses. From there, it all clicked. After graduating from Babson College, a business school near Boston, I moved to Washington, D.C., to work under a great craftsman and relative, Dave Swanson. Dave taught me a lot about all of the trades, enough to be dangerous. I went back to school and took classes in architecture and urban planning. A fortunate twist of events led me to Charleston, where I eventually saved and borrowed enough money to start Structures in 1999. My wife and I feel fortunate to have raised our three children in Mount Pleasant, and we love taking advantage of all the Lowcountry has to offer. Aside from work and family, another great passion of mine is East Cooper Habitat for Humanity. I’ve been a board member for close to ten years, and built three Habitat houses in the East Cooper community. I love what I do. It combines my passion for great architecture, quality construction and managing a professional business. I’ve surrounded myself with great people who share my commitment to providing outstanding service and quality to every single client who chooses to build their home with us.

In the late 1990s, I was given the opportunity to work with a local custom home builder. Having worked previously in a corporate environment, this move was a risky, but exciting, adventure. And it was in Charleston, which is the best place on earth to live and work. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this move would uncover a passion and excitement that would sustain my career for the next 20+ years. I was already a SC licensed realtor and soon obtained my residential home builder license. Business was good and the company grew. Building in some of the Lowcountry’s premier neighborhoods, I was exposed to Charleston’s beautiful architecture and had the privilege of working with some of the finest architects and craftsmen in town. In 2012, I was led to Structures Building Company, now Alair | Charleston Structures. Having known the owner, Steve Kendrick, for years, I knew Structures was a group of highly talented people who shared my passion for building. Custom building is both highly challenging and extremely rewarding, not only because of the incredible and unique houses we build, but also because of the relationships we develop with our clients along the way. There’s something special about bringing a group of people together, along with raw materials and supplies, to produce a structure that will be someone’s home. Whether they are raising their families or enjoying their retirement years, our clients’ homes are places that will not only provide shelter and security but will also be where life-long memories are made. I take great pride in knowing this and feel very fortunate to be a part of the Alair family.
