Bathroom Tiling- How to Finish Edges

How do you bridge the gap between a good bathroom renovation and an exceptional one? One way that really elevates the bathroom finish is the small trim details. How you finish off the edges of tile can take your bathroom renovation to the next level.

When you install tile that is porcelain or ceramic the edges of the tile don’t have the same finish as the face of the tile. This is a picture of a tile curb where that exposed edge is covered with a metal trim. This is the most common way of finishing a tile edge and considered to be the standard.

You can see that the tile that was mitered together has a more clean and modern look. However, it is more labor intensive to make all of those angled cuts line up perfectly. The labor part of this tile installation increased by close to twenty-five percent to accommodate this extra work. Some material like glass tiles can be more difficult or even not possible to miter.

Glass Tiling

If you are using a glass tile that cannot be mitered there is a way to customize the metal trim for a custom finish.

Another option is to custom make the metal trim as one piece so that you cannot
see any joints.

Having a trim piece with a mirror finish and without visible joints looks sharp. However, once again it is more labor intensive and can increase the trim costs by ten times.

Adding Detail to Tile Trim

If you have an eye for details and are looking to really make your bathroom exceptional customizations like miters and custom metal trim are worthwhile. I would recommend obtaining a General Contractor that understands the importance of the small details and finishes and use their resources to ensure the high level of finish that you are looking for.
