What We Do

The HPO is responsible for:

• licensing residential builders and building envelope renovators province-wide
• administering owner builder authorizations
• monitoring the performance of the third-party home warranty insurance system underwritten by the private sector, and
• carrying out research and education which benefits the residential construction industry and consumers.

As part of government’s review of Crown corporations, the Province transferred the administration of the Reconstruction Program to the Ministry of Finance effective April 1, 2010. HPO stopped accepting new applications for this program in July 2009. See the Ministry of Housing and Social Development Information Bulletin

Who We Serve

The HPO serves buyers of new homes and people arranging for new homes to be built, homeowners (particularly owners of homes covered by home warranty insurance), developers, residential builders and building envelope renovators. In undertaking its activities the HPO also works closely with warranty providers, building officials, industry and related consumer associations, governments including local governments and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), educational institutions, research organizations, architects, engineers, property managers, the legal community and the real estate community.

The CHBA’s membership includes new home builders, renovators, developers, trades, manufacturers, suppliers, lenders and other professionals – the companies and people who provide Canadians with quality housing from coast to coast. Members commit to act with integrity and professionalism in all aspects of their company’s operations.

The CHBA’s Standing Committees and Councils oversee the work of the Association in areas as diverse as technical and economic research, education and training, renovation, the environment, urban issues, warranty and marketing. Through the voluntary efforts of its members, the CHBA serves both consumers and producers of housing by promoting quality, affordability and choice in housing for all Canadians.

Standards

Like you, they demand a lot from our builders. We abide by a strict set of enrollment standards and internal processes such as rigorous inspections and underwriting policies. Their field inspectors thoroughly examine every home registered under the National Home Warranty program. This process assures you that another set of experienced eyes is overseeing the building of your home.

Secure Backing

National Home Warranty is underwritten by one of the largest insurance companies in the world. The Aviva Insurance Company of Canada, in partnership with National Home Warranty provides you with solid, secure warranty coverage.

Materials And Workmanship

Defects in materials and workmanship are covered by your warranty for the first year you are in your new home. Your new home is covered for two years for defects in:

• Delivery and distribution systems for gas, electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
• Exterior cladding, caulking, windows, and doors that cause damage to your new home.

They also provide coverage for non-compliance with the building code.

Building Envelope

Your new home is covered for defects in the building envelope for five years, including water penetration that causes material damage to the building.
